Off-Duty Butt-Dialing Bogota Police Sergeant Cleared In Anti-Schools Rant

BOGOTA, N.J. -- Bogota police have found no cause for disciplining a sergeant who was off duty when he butt-dialed the borough school district while going on an expletive-filled rant.

Reportedly angered by a personnel move, Sgt. Craig Lynch left the Steen Elementary School principal's office in August and was heard on voicemail vowing to ticket teachers as part of a war that the district would lose.

Bogota police conducted an internal investigation that cleared Lynch.

Capt. James Sepp advised district officials that investigators determined that the 28-year department veteran, who runs the borough's annual Emergency Services Youth Academy, did make the comments -- but that they were "justified, legal and or proper” under New Jersey state Attorney General guidelines.

“I know that I cannot make your feelings with regards to your incident go away," Sepp wrote, "but I do want you to understand that your complaint was investigated thoroughly.”

This hasn't satisfied some within the district.

Officials have banned Lynch from entering borough schools except in emergencies.

He was expected at a Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, however.
