The students at Eric S. Smith Middle School planted nearly 7,000 flags, one for each American killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, CBS reports.

The students decided to plant their field of flags after taking a trip to Washington, D.C. and learning about other students honoring fallen service members in a similar way, the story says.

“So proud of these students for expanding upon Ramsey’s time-honored tradition of commemorating Memorial Day by creating the Field of Flags,” superintendent Matthew Murphy said on Twitter.
