Seniors Invite Bergen Residents ‘Who Care About The Future' To Rally

POMPTON PLAINS, N.J. – Pat Thaler has always been a political activist.

Inge Goldstein, 87, and Pat Thaler, 84, are two of the organizers of a North Jersey rally set to coincide with the Women's March on Washington.

“I’ve been to Washington on many marches, anti-war, pro-choice, and so on,” she told Daily Voice.

But at 84 years old, she doesn’t have “the energy” to travel to participate in the upcoming Women’s March on Washington, she said.

The march is expected to draw thousands to the nation’s capital this Saturday, the day after President-Elect Donald Trump takes office.

Instead of remaining frustrated that she can’t travel, Thaler took action. She gathered with a group of fellow 80-somethings at her Cedar Crest retirement community to come up with a plan.

“I didn’t want to just stay home and ignore the Women’s March,” Thaler said. “I wanted to be in Washington, but I can’t, so I decided to organize a group in Pompton Plains to demonstrate our own solidarity with the Women’s March.”

The local rally is scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the municipal parking lot in Pequannock, 530 Newark-Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains.

Thaler expects people from all over North Jersey – including many from Bergen and Passaic Counties – to attend. Her daughter-in-law is even coming in from Westchester, she said.

During the rally, participants will carry signs with messages like, “Save the environment,” and “Fund Planned Parenthood,” she said. And demonstrators will talk “about all of the things that we are worried about that may be destroyed by the new administration,” she said.

“Men and women, young and old, who care about the future of our country are invited to join us,” Thaler said.
