Hayes sustained massive head trauma after being struck by an eastbound vehicle at 10:14 p.m., responders said late Thursday.

“At present the cause of the crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed,” Police Chief Richard Behrens said Friday.

"We were at the light to turn left onto 46 from Walmart and it seems she was crossing a specific area where there is a bus station across the street," a witness told Daily Voice. "She was definitely jaywalking.

"The light is super quick -- maybe 5 seconds of green," he said, "so the person that hit her was probably trying to beat the red.

"It's not the most-lit area and not pedestrian-friendly."

He paused.

"If I was in the wrong lane at the wrong time, this could have been me," he said.

Moonachie police were assisted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation – which collected evidence – the New Jersey Department of Transportation, which closed the highway, the Moonachie First Aid and Rescue Squad and Hasbrouck Heights firefighters, Behrens said.
