Urgent message from Garfield PBA Local #46

A POLICE UNION WRITES: In response to a recent newspaper article, we must clarify a misunderstanding. It has been questioned why Sgt. Jose A. Brito was permitted to work outside of his assigned administrative duty following the tragic events of Dec. 10, 2011.

The answer is found in our labor contract, which permits him to work off-duty details. Also, under departmental guidelines, a Garfield police officer must carry his or her service weapon whenever working those jobs.

Garfield PBA Local #46 feels that Sgt. Brito, who has been placed on administrative duty since the tragic incident, has been unfairly singled out, unjustly disparaged and wrongfully convicted by members of the United Residents of Garfield Engaging Neighborhood Transformation (URGENT).

All of our members have been and will continue to support our brother officer during these most difficult times.

We concur with remarks made by Police Chief Kevin Amos at this past Tuesday’s City Council meeting and stand united. We take pride in being recognized by him as being among the finest police departments in all of New Jersey.

We ask our community to be patient and to allow the investigation of this incident to work its way through the system before rushing to judgment.

Meanwhile, you continue to have the iron-clad promise of Garfield PBA Local #46 to do our very best to maintain a secure and safer Garfield.

Respectfully,

President Pedro Gongora
, Garfield PBA Local #46
State Delegate Everett Garnto Jr.
