An unknown amount of gasoline spilled into a storm drain just before 6:30 a.m. from the Lukoil station at the intersection of County Road and Hudson Avenue, Capt. Michael deMoncada said.
Patrol officers secured the area and the Tenafly Volunteer Fire Department responded, he said.
Bergen County HAZMAT and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection also were contacted to respond to the scene.
They were “working with a private contractor to mitigate the spill and safely collect any gasoline from the storm drain,” deMoncda said, adding that investigators were trying to determine the cause.
Although no threat existed, a strong odor remained.
County Road remained open in both directions, but periodic lane closures may be necessary for area work crews, the captain said.
