Tamier Hedgeman, 25, threw the sliver handgun near a garbage can on the side of 25 Oak Street as he was approached by Officer Joseph Carmichael, who was part of a quality-of-life patrol, Sheriff Richard H.. Berdnik said.

Hedgeman -- who has a previous felony conviction for aggravated assault -- then "walked away at a fast pace on Oak Street towards Madison Street," the sheriff said.

Carmichael alerted backups, who took him into custody, Berdnik said.

They then located the loaded Colt Python .357 Magnum containing five rounds, he said.

Hedgeman remained held in the Passaic County Jail pending a detention hearing on weapons charges -- including being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
