Officer Martin Clancy was checking the lookout, which was closed, when he found a parked car at 9:30 p.m., Police Chief Michael Coppola said.

“During his search, he located a white female beyond the barrier along the cliff edge adjacent to the parking lot” and walked toward her in an attempt to talk with her, Coppola said.

“Without warning, the woman jumped from the ledge to the cliff bottom,” he said.

Closter Rescue and East Bergen Rappel Team responded and recovered the body, the chief said.

“At this time, the incident does not involve suspicious circumstances as her jumping from the cliff was witnessed,” Coppola said.

Police were trying to determine the woman’s identity, he said.
