Hackensack Bicyclist Struck By Hit-Run SUV In Maywood, Arrest Made

MAYWOOD, N.J. -- (UPDATE) An 84-year-old Maywood man was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a serious injury to a bicyclist struck Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

MAYWOOD, N.J. — A Hackensack man in serious condition was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center after being struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle on Sunday afternoon in Maywood, authorities said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Fatal Accident Investigations Unit, which responds to both fatal and serious crashes, responded, along with borough police and the county sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification, which collected evidence.

Just before 1:30 p.m., the driver of a Ford Expedition was turning left onto Golf Avenue when he hit the cyclist, traveling down E. Passaic Street toward The Esplanade, witnesses told Daily Voice on the scene.

The biker appeared to be in his 20s or 30s, and sustained severe injuries to his left leg. He was responsive laying on the side of the road communicating with police when the ambulance arrived on the scene.
