Dumont police responding to a pair of 911 calls just before noon saw smoke coming out of the Shadyside Avenue house near the Bergenfield border, Chief Brian Venezio told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.

“Both residents were on their way out the door,” the chief said.

Engines from Bergenfield and New Milford, along with a ladder truck from Tenafly and a fast team from Cresskill, joined their Dumont counterparts.

Dumont’s ambulance squad also responded but wasn’t needed, Venezio said.

Teaneck’s fire department provided essentials for those on scene.

Meanwhile, Dumont DPW employees poured sand and salt on the roadway to combat the freezing runoff.

Fire inspectors were looking into the cause of the blaze, the chief said.
