Cresskill had been relatively free of the heavy burglary activity affecting several area towns — until 10 o’clock last night.

After shouldering in the front door of the empty Stonegate Trail home, the burglars made it to a second-floor bedroom.

But “something spooked them,” Wrixon said. “It could have been a phone ringing, or someone outside.”

A neighbor told police he saw two men run off in separate directions. They were wearing dark clothing and possibly dark masks.

Besides taking the necessary steps to burglar-proof your home, Wrixon urged citizens to provide additional eyes and ears.

“If you see anything at all suspicious, call police immediately. Don’t wait,” the chief said.

“So many times people see things but don’t call. They say, ‘I don’t want to bother you.’

“But that’s what we’re here for,” Wrixon said. “It’s not a bother.”
