CLOSTER, N.J. -- Everyone got out safely, thanks to a passing Closter police officer, after a house fire broke out before dawn Tuesday.
Officer Aldo Guerino saw smoke coming from the third-floor bedroom at 465 High Street just after 12:30 a.m., Police Chief Dennis Kaine said.
Guerino forced his way in and woke a second-floor tenant, then went to the third floor, where he was met by a tenant escaping heavy smoke, Kaine said.
Borough firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, assisted by their colleagues from Demarest, Norwood, and Northvale, the chief said.
The borough First Aid Squad assisted with the two tenants, who both refused medical assistance, he said.
The fire began on a bed, the chief said. The borough's Fire Prevention squad was investigating, he added.
Building officials deemed the house inhabitable, Kaine said.
