YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Closter police need your help in being re-accredited: The phone lines will be open next Monday morning for comments on how they protect and serve the community.

A team of assessors from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP), on a tour of departments in North Jersey, will stop in this Sunday to “examine all aspects of the Closter Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services,” Police Chief Dennis Kaine said this morning.

The team, which includes law enforcement officers from various agencies throughout the state, reviews reports, interviews department personnel and has a look around headquarters.

The process includes asking department employees and citizens to call in from 9 to 11 a.m. next Monday, Dec. 17, and provide their opinions.

The number: (201) 784-0600 ext. 340

NOTE: Phone comments are limited to 5 minutes and “must address the agency’s ability to comply” with standards the department is required to meet.

You can put it in writing, too:

Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission

Suite 201
Marlton, N.J. 08053

The full commission then decides whether to grant accreditation.

“Accreditation results in greater accountability within the agency, reduced risk and liability exposure, stronger defense against civil lawsuits, increased community advocacy, and more confidence in the agency’s ability to operate efficiently and respond to community needs,” Kaine said.

Other departments being visited by the chiefs association for accreditation this weekend include Ridgewood.
