Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department got the call from Alpine police just after noon yesterday that the man might be in the area of the State Line Lookout, PIPPD Chief Michael Coppola said.
Coppola said his officers teamed up with Alpine police, a K9 unit from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Palisades Interstate Park Trail Crew to search more than five miles of trails in the lookout and into the New York area.
A ping to the man’s phone put him just north of the lookout, the chief said.
After a fruitless two-hour ground search, mutual aid rappeling squads were summoned. They are comprised of Closter EMS/Rescue, the East Bergen Rappel Team and the Englewood Cliffs Fire Department.
As members of the team began a cliffside search, officers continued scouring the area for the 5-foot-8-inch, 150-pound man.
Around 4 p.m., Belcolle and Colissi found him in the woods south of the original spot.
“EMS already on scene for the search operations treated the victim and transported him to Englewood Medical Center,” Coppola said.
Hospital without further incident.
