Ridgewood Native Rallies For Family Who Jumped From House Fire

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — More than $3,000 had been raised as of Tuesday morning on a GoFundMe launched by a Ridgewood High School graduate for her dad and step mom who lost their Red Bank Home last month in a fire.

Samantha Feller said the afternoon began "just like any other day, and nothing seemed out of place. Little did my family know that just 15 minutes later they would lose everything."

The house caught fire and her stepmom, Shirley, grabbed the dog and ran out first. Feller's dad, Richard, went back in to yell upstairs for her step brother, Will, who was taking a nap.

He ended up jumping from the 2nd story window — his only option of escape — and injured on the way down.

"The chaos that ensued after would last until the days end at midnight," said Feller of Midland Park.

"My dad, Richard had smoke inhalation, singed the hair on his hands and head, and had minor burns. Will had very bad back pain and had to wait at least two hours before receiving any treatment at the hospital.

"Meanwhile, Shirley was watching her home burn to the ground and talking with police."

Feller's family is currently in the process of rebuilding their lives, said Feller, a Haworth yoga teacher.
