CRESSKILL, N.J. — Happy Birthday to Cresskill’s Johnny Damon!
The former New York Yankees outfielder is 44 Sunday.
Damon’s Major League Baseball career began in 1995 with the Kansas City Royals. He also played with the Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Indians.
He is best known as an outfielder for the New York Yankees from 2006-09, when he lived in Cresskill. He was on two World Series championship teams, winning with Boston in 2004 and the Yankees in 2009.
A Thai-American, Damon was born on a U.S. Army Base in Fort Riley, Kansas. He had problems speaking and was “a very quiet child.” He improved his disability with speech therapy that included singing songs.
As a child, he played Little League in South Orange.
He hasn’t officially retired, but didn’t play the last three seasons.
