“Essential oils are not just something that smells good,” says Maria G. Turchi, a licensed massage therapist and accountant. “They actually have a deeper purpose - to support the functioning of the body physically, emotionally & spiritually.”

Turchi started working with essential oils 14 years ago, when she sought to help her son who has Down syndrome. She tried elimination diets and homeopathy, but found that the oils were key for his respiratory issues.

She went on to take classes and for four years taught for The Center for Aromatherapy Research and Education.

“A big part of what I do is teach the therapeutic use of essential oils, beyond the smell,” she said.

Turchi noted the difference between perfume grade essential oils and the quality of the essential oils that she works with.

“It’s purity, purity, purity," she said. "Most essential oils in the market are perfume-grade. Those are things that I teach people beyond the smell. There’s a lot more behind it.

“Most people think of lavender for relaxation, however lavender is also great for skin, and for respiratory support,” Turchi said.

It is all about maximizing the benefits and learning to use oils topically, as a supplement or by diffusing.

Turchi also speaks at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center in Morristown and other places, sharing her experiences of visiting the fields in Utah where some of the oils she has on hand are grown and distilled.

Her next workshop at Cresskill Public Library is Wed Nov. 18 6:30 - 8 p.m. Her following includes occupational and physical therapists as well as everyday people from moms who want to help their youngsters or vice versa.

“Now my son is able to figure out which essential oils to use on a daily basis. He does it all by himself - he’s 21 now,” she said.
